In the United States, an estimated 10% of older adults experience abuse or neglect by a caregiver each year. The National Center on Elder Abuse defines elder abuse as intentional or neglectful acts by a caregiver or trusted individual that lead to, or may lead to, harm of a vulnerable elder. Most often, elder abuse occurs in domestic home situations and is typically perpetrated by family members, caregivers, or an associate of the victim.

In general, elder abuse is classified into one or more of the following categories:
  • Physical - intentional infliction of pain or injury.
  • Financial - exploitation by the illegal or improper use of an elderly person's funds or resources.
  • Psychological - intentional infliction of mental anguish.
  • Neglect or Abandonment - Intentional or unintentional refusal or failure of a designated caregiver to meet the required needs of an older person's well-being.
  • Sexual - Unwanted sexual advances or non-consentual sexual contact.

The literature describes several risk factors that are associated with elder abuse or neglect:
  • Female gender - Older women are more likely to be victims than older men.
  • Shared living environment - living with a large number of household members other than a spouse has been linked to an increased risk of both physical and financial abuse.
  • Cognitive deficits - elderly people with dementia and Alzheimer's disease are at particular risk for financial abuse.
  • Isolation and a lack of social support

  • Functional impairment and poor physical health increase the risk of elder abuse, irrespective of the underlying cause of these limitations.

Beyond the obvious physical trauma which victims may experience, elder abuse is associated with a range of negative consequences, including:
  • Increased risk of death even after statistically adjusting for other underlying comorbid conditions that victims may have.
  • Increased likelihood of placement in a nursing home.
  • Increased risk of hospitalization.
  • Increased risk of psychological deficits, such as anxiety disorder and depression.
